START COLLECTING NOW!
The next textile collection will be on Wednesday 9th May. A great opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles. If you don’t have room at home to store your donations, you can now bring them along to Andrea’s Cafe in Ockwells Park where Andrea will gladly store them for you. The cafe is open Tuesday – Sunday from 10am.

You can donate: Adults' and children's clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, bags, soft toys, curtains and bedding (not duvets or pillows).

We will receive £500 per tonne or £0.50/kg which will be a great boost for our fundraising. In addition it will also raise awareness amongst the children of the benefits of recycling and reuse.

Our last collection on Wednesday 30 November 2011 raised an amazing £ 624.50 towards the PTA funds!  A total of 1249kg of material was donated. Thank you to all who brought in textiles and helped out on the day!

If you fill the donation bag and still have more then you can use any other bag to donate your items and don’t forget to ask grandparents, friends and neighbours to have a sort out as well!

For more details about Bag2School take a look at their website (opens new window).

Cake Stall Challenge

Both the Year 3/4 (on Friday 3rd Feb) and the Year 5/6 (on Friday 2nd March) Cake Stall Challenges were a great success.

The photo was taken at the Year 3/4 sale ...as you can see, a fabulous selection of delicious cakes were made for the sale.

Over £100 was made at each ...to help support your child's learning.

What great results!

We can't wait to see what Years 1/2 can do when its their turn on Friday 4 May ...can you beat this?!

Treasures and Treats Evening

From the school newsletter: "The Treasures and Treats evening last Friday was a huge success. Those who attended had a very relaxed evening during which they were  thoroughly pampered and given  the opportunity to unwind.  The  evening  raised  over  £600  and  will  certainly  be  repeated again. Many thanks to the PTA Dream Team for another successful evening….roll on the school  disco!   The  PTA’s  facebook  page  (search  for  ‘Wessex  PTA’)  was  awash  with appreciative comments about the gifts received last Sunday." Thanks to all those who came along, and all those who helped out!

Mother's Day Presents

This year we held a "secret" sale where pupils could buy something special for Mum.  It was a great success, raising some money and spreading the love at the same time!  Here's just one of the comments we received:

Do you know this is one of the best ideas ever for my girls. I have not received a gift in the last 4 years because there was no one to take them shopping, but this year thanks to Wessex PTA they were able to be 'Little Miss Independents!!' THANK YOU it meant a lot to us all xxx

What is the PTA?

The Wessex Primary School PTA (Parent Teachers Association) exists to raise money for the school's "little extras". In the recent past PTA-raised money has funded:

  • The Playground Fort
  • Artist visits to school
  • School trips
  • PE equipment
  • Football kit for school team
  • Visualisers for use in classrooms (sophisticated overhead projectors)
  • Garden improvements and play equipment in the nursery
  • Part of the Playground Makeover project
  • A fully equiped kitchen in Lower School
  • Golden time games/activites for all year groups (Years 1-6)
  • Year 6 Leavers Party & activities

Every parent/guardian of a pupil is automatically a member of the PTA. There is also a PTA Committee which organises and runs events. Any parent/guardian/teacher can join the committee.

The Wessex Primary School PTA is a registered charity - charity number 1041997.

PTA Events and Activities

We have been running a series of successful annual events over the past few years, these are:

Right: The performance area at the PTA Summer Fair 2009.

Other PTA activities include Pilates (for details contact parent Claire Mundy via the school office) and dancing at the May Fayre at the Cox Green Community Centre.

PTA Committee

The PTA Committee meets about 8 times per year, as necessary mainly when events are approaching. The Committee members work together to create events, organising everything required to make the events successful, fun, safe and profitable.

Events do not just happen by magic - they take time and effort to put together! So please consider joining in and helping. There is no "minimum commitment" - just do as much as you would like to. All efforts will be gratefully received.  We keep in touch using an easy-to-use email group.

The current PTA Chair is Anne Briggs. A new Committee is chosen at an Annual General Meeting near the beginning of every school year.

The Committee also decide how the money raised will be spent.

The 2011/12 Committee members are as follows, along with the classes you are most likely to find them outside:

  • Gill Alton (Yr2 Chestnut & Yr4 Larch)
  • Kay Bailey (Yr4 Larch)
  • Miriam Baker (Yr4 Lime)
