Green Class - Year 2
This term we have read a range of books by Martin Waddell. The children have enjoyed writing book reviews and comparing his stories. Clara enjoyed reading ‘Can’t you sleep Little Bear’ because they went outside in the dark and Little Bear fell asleep. Jace liked ‘Pig in the pond’ because it was funny when all the animals and Neligan jumped into the pond.
The children were invited to a Drama Workshop based on Fairytales. They went on an exciting adventure to find the missing Fairytale book which the Wicked Queen had taken and hidden in her Castle. The children disguised themselves as Sparkling Stars and Fairytale characters. Emma enjoyed eating the apple pie. Alex found it very funny when the Queen, shouted “I want my Mummy!” Tyler really loved finding the person under Sleeping Beauty’s Cloak.
The children have improved the skill of asking questions. They were presented with a picture and a list of key words. The children had to think of a range of questions about this picture.
They came up with some super questions. Such as: Who put it there? When did it arrive? Who does it belong to? Why is it floating? What is it?
We had a great time at Waltham Place. The children took part in a range of activities and the weather was wonderful. When we arrived the children had to listen carefully to Nikki. She told the children about the disinfectant mat, crossing the road, closing the gate and other rules.
The first task was to look for bees in the flowers. We found different types of bees in the flowers, some were called ‘Red bottom bees’ because they had a red bottom. They come in different sizes and shapes. Did you know that bees don’t like stinging you and if they do they die! After that a gardener found a snail to show us. Snails like to stay in damp and shady places, they also like to eat leaves. We left this snail on some horseradish.
Next we smelt the beautiful roses. One child remarked that the rose smelt like her Grandmother!
Later Nikki took us into the forest. She beated a bush with a stick (please don’t try this at home) and collected the mini-beasts on a white sheet. She scoped up a mini-beast and placed it into a pot for us to see. We also made our own food chain.
We went to the gardens to look at the flowers. We tried to match the coloured chips to leaves and flowers. We found some colours were difficult to match especially blue.
We continued to walk through the woods and met a family of Canadian Geese with their babies. We said, "Hello!" to the Cows and a Bull. The children enjoyed watching the flies and the cows chewing the cud.
We explored the bluebell forest. The children used special mirrors to understand an insect’s viewpoint of the forest.
Finally the children made a collage in small groups, they made a flower garden, an oak tree, beehive sculptures, forest and the tallest tree they had seen. The children thought the day was ‘brilliant’, ‘exciting’, ‘fantastic’, ‘fabulous’ and ‘superb’.
In Literacy we made Fruity Scones. We used scales to weigh different ingredients and we measures the milk in a measuring jug.
We found it very tricky to mix the ingredients and keep them in the bowl.We had to roll out the dough carefully so it was the same thickness all over. Finally we used a cutter and placed our scones on a baking tray. The scones tasted ‘tasty,’ ‘crunchy,’ ‘the raisins were squashy,’ ‘they were very soft,’ sweet’ and ‘yummy!’
In Numeracy we baked biscuits for our Café. The children measured and made a sign, brought items from the café and finally ate the scones and biscuits.
