It has been another great term again in year 5. In History we have finished our WW2 topic with a VE party [Victory in Europe ].This involved dressing up as a child in WW2 and tasting some sweet foods then we thought about how people would feel. During art we’ve been looking at different water techniques and effects to make water look more real in our pictures. We hope you have a Merry Christmas and we look forward to another brilliant term.

Again it has been a lovely term in year 5. In Mrs Dawson’s maths group we have been learning about the column method of subtraction using 3 and 4 digit numbers. We have also been learning about parallel lines and we have made up a song about it.

(Sung to the tune of The Ants go Marching Two by Two)

The parallel lines go down the track and they never ever meet

The parallel lines go down the track and they never ever meet

The parallel lines go down the track they never meet and that’s a fact

We hope you have a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

What a fantastic time Y5 have had celebrating VE Day. We listened to Churchill declaring the war was over and the party preparations began. We made flags, listened to music and then sat down for our sweets and cakes. As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day we danced the Lindy Hop after we had eaten. What a brilliant way to end our WW2 topic.

It has been a busy term in Year 5. Here are some of our children's comments.

For our Literacy, we have been reading a book called Stig of the Dump. It is about two children called Barney and Lou. Lou has loads of friends that she goes hunting with. Barney on the other hand has one friend called Stig. Stig lives in a dump. Stig is cave man and is really good at drawing. Lou goes hunting in the book and chases a man who fell off a cliff-but luckily Barney and Stig saved him. We also watched the film and decided which one we liked the best.

In Art, we have been studying Monet and doing water pictures. The type of water pictures we have been doing are reflections. We had to draw a picture and then get a spoon, fold the paper in half and then rub it on to the other side. We then painted over it. We have also been doing lake and pond scenes using tissue paper. We used colours like blue, dark blue, light blue and turquoise.

In French, we have just got our French pen pals! We jumped and screamed when we heard the news. From their school window they can see the Eifel Tower!

We have just sent our pen pals Christmas cards-I wonder when they will get them! 5C are still waiting eagerly to receive theirs!

In PE we have been learning about being a football coach. It has been great fun. We have been dribbling the ball, practising scoring goals and learning how to pass the ball. I really enjoyed doing starjogs – I know most of you will think what is a starjog-well you run, jog and wave your arms like you're doing star jumps.

In ICT we have been very busy making Power Point presentations about favourite hobbies to show to the rest of the class. There have been some fantastic presentations about card making, football and Japanese!

I really liked our class assembly. We didn’t just say what we had learnt but we also did some acting.

In Science we have been investigating sound. We have made up our own investigations and decided how we would find the answer. Some of our questions included how far could sound travel and which materials could sound travel through. We also investigated how different instruments play different pitched sounds.
