We will be open as planned on Monday, 6th September at the usual time after a very busy Summer break. The re-wire of the lower school and nursery buildings is complete and the staff have worked incredibly hard to get everything back in place and ready for the children. The new building is also well under way, we have a brand new outside area for our Reception children and the new school environmental garden is also starting to look great. On arrival at school, children and parents will be directed to their new classrooms - 'left' for Green and Red classes and 'Right' for all other children, across the Upper School playground. We are really looking forward to the start to the new term and look forward to seeing you all back and ready to learn on Monday!

This has been yet another busy and exciting time in Year 5! We have had a super science workshop with URENCO to find out about science in the real world, spent a day as an Athenian or Spartan child to find out what it would have been like to have lived in Ancient Greece and some us even performed our World War Two dance at the Magnet Leisure Centre! Find out about some of the things that we have been up to.

In science we have been learning about changing state. First we planned our owninvestigation. You could include chocolate, material or liquid. We thought about investigations like how quickly does chocolate melt or freeze and do all liquids evaporate? After that we had to show our results in a chart. Then we thought about how we could make our investigation different.

In English we have been learning about Highwaymen . We talked about any that we knew of and what they did . We also read a poem about called ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes. It is about a highwayman who goes to visit his true love Bess the landlord’s daughter . Tim the ostler was listening to what they were saying and told king George’s men . They came and tied Bess up and then waited for the highwayman to return . Bess killed herself because she was hurt and upset . The highwayman heard the bang of the gun and started to ride in the opposite direction . Meanwhile king George’s men were waiting in a clearing and as the highwayman went past he got shot.

In maths we have been learning about division and methods for division. Some of the methods were very very long and a lot to take in but we got there in the end! The long one was quite hard but the short method we did the next day was easy for some of us, plus it was Year 6 work and our teacher Mrs Corbett was very proud of us all. And we all loved the lesson thanks to Mrs. Corbett!

This term in music we have been learning about a pentatonic scale and pitches. A pitch is how HIGH or how LOW a note is. A pentatonic scale is a scale with only five notes in. Both Year five classes have been doing this music with Mrs Dawson. All Year five classes can’t wait to find out what super, fun and exciting piece of music we will be learning next time!

In history we are learning about the Ancient Greeks. We drew the 12 Greek Gods and Goddesses .We also made a storyboard using materials like felt and fabric to make our own myths like the Wooden Horse of Troy and Cyclops. We watched myths like Jason and the Golden Fleece to get ideas. We have learnt about life in Sparta and Athens which were very different .It has been great fun and I hope we continue this fun.

The beginning of term was all snow and biscuits!!!
