Find out about our major developments in the school grounds, like our playground makeover, ICT Suite and other developments.

Below are the details of our most recent developments:

The Library

With the introduction of more than 90 new laptops for the children to use, our ICT suite became effectively redundant, and so has been completely refitted and redecorated in order to become a fabulous new Library for children in both Lower and Upper School.  The Library has an 'under the sea' theme to it and includes squishy floor cushions in the shape of octopuses and dolphins, fantastic underwater photo-print blinds and a soft deep-pile rug ideal for sitting on during story-time.  The Library will also house a number of desktop PC's for both children and parents to access for homework help after school.

The Atrium

Our brand-new, purpose build, school and finance offices and reception area.  The high, cedar ceiling in the reception area, along with the floor to ceiling glass at the rear of the building gives a great sense of space - enhanced by the 'moon' lighting system.

The Lilac Room

The Lilac Room once housed the catering facilities for Lower School, but has now been converted to a multi-purpose room, enabling us to provide a relaxing space for one-to-one and  small group teaching, Breakfast club and lunchtime clubs and activities.  The Lilac room is also 'home' to the Cox Green After School Club which provides after school care and activities for children from both Wessex and Lowbrook Academy.

Andersen Shelter

Children in Year 5 cover a major topic in History about World War 2.  Among the activities the children take part in a a 're-enactment' of an Evacuation.  This year the children will also be able to experience a bombing raid (without the bombs!) by taking shelter in our very own Andersen shelter!

Our Gardens:

Sensory Garden and Pond

With the help of a number of volunteers from local business, Mr Porter's hard work and several lorry loads of decking, topsoil and plants, our Lower School garden is transformed into a haven of peace and tranquility. The gentle water fall tumbles into the pond below, which is home to frogs, fish and other wildlife.  Tall grasses wave and rustle in the breeze while the scent of lavender, rose and more combine to complete the sense of calm.  Our sensory garden is beautiful!

The Polytunnel

Our Gardenning club have recently purchased a polytunnel which will maximise their ability to grow seedlings for the raised beds, planters and hanging baskets around the school.

Upper School Hall Re-decorated

Mr Porter and Mr Stevens had a very busy Summer Holiday during which the Upper School hall was re-decorated. The need to both brighten the space and bring a little warmth to better reflect the heart of Wessex was long overdue. The blue and yellow colour scheme compliments the newly stripped and re-polished floor and ensures it is a space we can all enjoy during assemblies, lunch times, PE lessons and on many other occasions. The other benefit is that our hall now represents a more inviting location for members of the local community who wish to meet and hire the hall for any number of meetings or functions, bringing in valuable revenue which directly impacts on the general provision for our children.

Kitchen Area in Lower School

Our PTA very kindly donated £1500 from the money they have raised this year to provide our children and staff with an effective resource for learning about food. We aim to provide children with a relevant, practical and hands on approach to their learning wherever possible, whilst at the same time beginning to provide them with the life skills they will need in the future. From our Nursery upwards, all of our children have the opportunity to plant, grow and harvest their own food and gain a first hand experience of where their food comes from. This can now be taken one step further where groups of children will be able to prepare and cook their own food. Examples from last year include bread, pizzas, butter, salad caterpillars, honey, pancakes and biscuits. We know these experiences will continue to grow and flourish with our new cookery area and look forward to opportunities for children to continue to learn both from and about food from around the world.
